"The daily interaction with the pigs & the land they're inhabiting has become like an extended meditation, each moment, each experience incubating the next, serenely but certainly; it's allowed me to place myself in time...I remember when it started & I know when it's going to end. It's going to end with the death of pigs."

Never keep a single pig, we are told, right at the beginning. Always two at least; more if you like. A pig needs company, stimulation, interaction. A pig needs to be part of a herd. A drift of pigs, it was called, in the middle ages.

Is this book chiefly about real pigs? I remember that when I used to be in the countryside they were looking so sweet as babies, first couple of months of their life. But the year end was always dreadful because of the planned ending :(
