I can belieave that the Guideways were written both as a reflection of wu-shamanic practices as well as for entertainment, several of its critters fit shamanic hallucinations and stuff people write for a good laugh.

So a legend says that this King Yan of Xu was collecting strange animals... hm, I wonder how that looked like. And if this Xu is a state, why is it referred to belong to China? How does this book define "China?"
