Recently gotten interested in playing this game (1) because a sibling has been enjoying playing it in FFXIV (2) a favorite streamer plays online matches of "Mahjong Soul" with friends. I want to understand what's going on, and eventually play it myself (against AI to start with).
Our author uses "he" as an indefinite pronoun 100% of the time. Never "she," or even "he or she." What is this, 1950?

I understand the difficulties with creating a beginners' text for a complex, holistic game, but putting the scoring chapter before the hand pattern chapter made things more difficult for me than they needed to be. I'll skip ahead to the hand patterns, then try the scoring chapter a second time with that information in mind.
