I don’t know why I feel like pointing this out, but I find it interesting how many of the novels I’ve read within the past year (2022-2023) that have alluded to Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, namely the novels Anna Karenina and Crime and Punishment, respectively. It seems that these two novels are the novels to read in English literature, written by Russian authors. Interesting!

”Dance songs turned out to consist of one sentence repeated over and over. For example: ’I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain.’ Why would a desert miss rain? Why wasn’t it okay for a desert to be a desert, why couldn’t anything just be what it was, why did it always have to be missing something?”
In fact, a desert would not be a desert, if it had rain…

…and then the mention of War and Peace on p. 124. I guess Tolstoy, specifically, will be the next couple books I pick up. Emma has been telling me to read War and Peace…
