Whyyyyy is it a 'thing' for literary novels to not use speech marks? Speech marks serve a purpose, and trying to keep track of what is and isn't dialogue and who's speaking is doing my head in and I'm only 20 pages in.
-_-
Maybe I'm just not smart enough for literary fiction, or at least not smart enough in a 'literary' way.

Whoever owned this copy before me has written notes on all the pages where there are historical inaccuracies...

For me personally, and in the works I see them forgone most often, it is to create a more surreal dissonance. Especially if it is a book that serves to be a bit haunting. It slows the reader down making them more likely to savor the prose. But I also understand why some readers don’t love it.
