“You need to get laid” okay wHat? Wilde’s books have never been a beacon of historical accuracy but like??? Was this a phrase in the 80s when this book was written???

“Actresses were supposed to be temperamental and exclusive, haughty creatures who were surrounded by sycophants and had nothing to do with the common folk” ya so not an expert on 18th century theatre but I do that actresses were on the same social scale as sex workers, and definitely were not seen as “nothing to do with the common folk”.

Maybe it’s because I have allergies, but having sex on a haystack, especially when it’s your first time, sounds absolutely itchy and miserable!

“Father didn’t consider me one of the “females”. We had a special relationship…we were friends as well as father and daughter, allies against female tyranny that prevailed throughout the rest of the house” YUP lol HAS NOT AGED WELL

I genuinely don’t understand why I like Wilde’s books, as they haven’t aged well, the MCs are all generally the same, and I just read the word “horny” in a book that I’m guessing takes place in the 18th or early 19th century, but something about his writing sucks me in.

I would murder someone to find an og physical copy of the book, I’m obsessed with the cover.

Grace Peck Like I’ve read the Marietta trilogy and there’s lots of inaccuracies and whatever, but the language always felt like at least like an attempt at 18th century speech lol?? At least there weren’t phrases like “horny” and “getting laid”

Lol I was a docent at a huge living history museum for 10+ years - it was awesome - when I was new (and pretty young at the time, maybe 17) I once accidentally referred to an 1870s waffle maker as "cool" in front of someone who was training me. OMG. They were so horrified at my use of modern vocabulary you would have thought I was giving tours naked*. Happily my reputation recovered but geeezzz. You might say that wildly inappropriate period vocabulary now gives me a bit of an eye twitch 😂😂 I don't get too stressed out about it but it definitely jumps out at me!

You want to see some real mayhem, wear a gown with a zipper in it to a civil war reenactment, holy shit the place might blow up 😂

*In my defense, it was really ffing cool. I mean who knew that in the 1870s they had waffle irons that were attached to the stove and did the whole flippy spinny thing like our modern Belgian waffle makers??

Grace Peck That’s so funny lol, I was in Salem, MA this past fall and a lot of people were in historical puritan dress and I’m by no means a fabric expert but you could tell who put effort into the dress and who went to like party city.
