The absence of quotation marks doesn’t make it totally unreadable, but remains very off-putting.

I’m having a hard time rooting for a main character who is described as self-assured, but really seems to tie a concerning amount of her self worth to how she is treated by a man who is largely unremarkable, with the exception of his intellectual superiority complex and being good in bed.
