The narration appears to take a greater “nurture” slant and attributes Roget’s social deficiencies, passion for systemizing, lack of richer modules for experiencing the world, & possibly also lack of introspection - to a controlling & selfish mother. Systemizing is a means of escape, & possibly resisting depression. But maternal behavior is bidirectional. & Roget’s innate temperament must be the first cause.
