Such discussions were livelier in Venice than other parts of Italy because a relative intellectual freedom allowed for a more open expression of ideas. The questions that could be posed were seemingly boundless: Could women make powerful rulers? Were they too capricious and voluble to rule? Were they inherently virtuous or prone to vice? Did they even have souls?
