[Amongst the author’s summarising paragraphs]
“…artist who in Florence ran up debts on sweet meats…”

SHE WAS MY SISTER FROM ANOTHER MISTER 🙌

Confused on points about her name here. Apparently Orazio (G’s artist father) was Pisa native, but Artemisia was born in Rome. Presumably father operated under Gentileschi. When in Florence she used family name of Lomi, “which would have been recognisable to Tuscans familiar with relatives Baccio and Aurelio Lomi.” But so should they know Gentileschi anyway? Pisa not that far from Florence?

The questions that could be posed were seemingly boundless: Could women make powerful rulers? Were they too capricious & voluble to rule? Were they inherently virtuous or prone to vice? Did they even have souls? Characteristically, Loredan & the Incogniti took up both sides of these issues, rarely with any consistency. More importantly, Venice was one of the few places where women were participants in such debates.

I had great ambition for wanting to read this book after finishing The Passion of Artemisia by Vreeland, but I just didn't have the time. However, it looks like a thorough study of Artemisia's work. Much more of a history and less of an art book.

Such discussions were livelier in Venice than other parts of Italy because a relative intellectual freedom allowed for a more open expression of ideas. The questions that could be posed were seemingly boundless: Could women make powerful rulers? Were they too capricious and voluble to rule? Were they inherently virtuous or prone to vice? Did they even have souls?
