Smawg was really cool but the fact that he was killed by a single lucky arrow leans further into my point that I think this book’s plot relies a bit too much on lucky chance.
But Thror’s turn is also very cool.

Bilbo and Co. are either extremely lucky of extremely unlucky.
Like, they either get kidnapped by Goblins and lose all their supplies because they sat in the wrong cave, or they manage to escape capture from the elves which happened to be the only possible way they could have succeeded.
I get stories are based on this kind of stuff, but it’s kinda extreme here.

Beorn is best character.
The Mirkwood bit is great, except I find it kind of weird how Bilbo suddenly becomes this ultimate warrior, running and jumping around, swinging his sword and butchering hundreds of spiders. I get that his character has been developing into an adventurer throughout his journey, but he suddenly jumps from burglar to hero very quickly out of nowhere.

The riddle rap battle was cool.
The odds of Bilbo finding that tiny ring in that massive cave system is absolutely minuscule, but I guess that’s the point.
The eagles are nicer than any real world nation period.

First fantasy book ever here we go.
Great balance between writing detail and also pacing of the plot. Tolkien manages to richly describe every character and location without getting bogged down in unnecessary explanation (*cough cough* Ian McEwan)
