It's not actually bad if you are sleeping late I guess. It's a biological trait that we acquired from evolution. What's important is that you get enough sleep - that is, 8 hours on average. Night owls tend to be so diverted from the current world, it's hard to get enough sleep and in time, owls have to face consequences of sleep deprivation.

Abhy Melatonin is a signal that says "It's dark, it's dark" to the human brain. It activates the other cells in the human brain which triggers sleep, but does not actually trigger itself.

The first of two factors that determine wake and sleep is the circadian rhythm - body clock. Our body has its own timezone - irrespective of Earth's revolution - which was established by kleitman and richardson, saying our body clock is slightly longer than a day, to be around 24 hours and 15 minutes. The light of sun methodically resets our inaccurate internal timepiece each and every day, but not necessarily. Cues like food, exercise, and even regularly timed social interactions can help resetting our biological clock for synchronisation with the daily orbital mechanics of planet Earth. The second factor is sleep pressure, which imposes the desire to sleep due to the accumulation of a chemical called adenosine, which builds up for every waking minute.

There is also a section on jet-lag which was quite interesting!
