In this book, the family celebrates Christmas and they have family over to their house and have a big Christmas dinner. The children also receive presents on Christmas morning from Santa and their parents. Laura, the youngest child, received a beautiful doll from her parents. This replaced her old doll which was just corn rapped in a blanket. This shows that her parents are very generous and care about her very much.

In this book, I really enjoy reading about the setting. I enjoy the setting because it takes place in a giant forest, in a time where you have to make everything yourself. I like reading about how lives back then compare to lives right now. For example, in the winter, they have to preserve most of their food so that it will last them through the winter, but now, we don't need to preserve food because we have stores.

In this book, both time and place affects the story greatly. It takes place in a giant forest, with no civilization, in the 1809s. They live in the middle of no where, so they have to make everything themselves, and live off of the wild. They need to constantly work hard because if they don't, they won't survive. This affects their lifestyle, their chores, and their hobbies.

The family includes a mother, a father, and three little girls, Mary, Laura, and Carrie. So far, this book has taken place in fall and winter, and it shows how the family takes care of each other, entertains themselves, and what chores and work they need to do to live in the woods.
