Really forgot what a slog this book can be. The highlights of the language Mantel uses can be great, but the story just conflicts with what I know of the historical Cromwell, so I have a hard time concentrating on what Mantel envisions his story to be.

What can I say about Wolf Hall? I remember the first time I read it. the quoteless speakers drove me crazy. But I persevered. There are only a few dozen books in which I've done this and not dropped like a hot potato, and this is one of only a few books that reward sticking to it. Hardest to read of all the history-fiction books I've read but in the end, most rewarding.

Rereading to prepare for the TV series.
