Specifically, the Sea Whip goes by the proper name of Rusalye, a legendary beast in Ravkan folktales. Some say it's an ice dragon, others a sea creature. In some tales, he was a dragon prince cursed to guard a treacherous part of the True Sea known as the Bone Road. The Sea Whip was captured and taken by Sturmhond’s crew. Alina now has possession of it as the second amplifier out of the three needed to destroy the Shadow Fold and the Darkling’s potential to expand it and take over the world.

Now, on page 106, Sturmhond has made a deal to take Mal and Alina to meet a new client of his, the reason why he made both of them escape the Darkling’s grasp: because of a overbid. They agree to hear what the client has to say, however, if they don’t like what the client says, Sturmhond states that he will take them wherever they want in the world. But, if they want to “sink the ship” and leave everyone to their death, they could do that too. Alina and Mal decided to take the deal he offered. Thus, their on their way back to western Ravka. Alina is thinking about staying in Ravka to help destroy the Fold, but she needs the firebird’s amplifier to make her power and greedy satisfaction complete. Mal feels worried about the entire situation, especially since he just witnessed the uncontrolled light Alina had just released on the ship.
