I am starting to think Creative Writing courses genuinely advice to have the whole 'character has to look into a mirror to know what they look like' in a story, even when it's 3rd person and any other way of sharing the info (maybe aside from character X telling Y what Y looks like) would do. probably better.
hope this isn't a warning sign...
