I've struggled with this first quarter because I'm not sufficiently emotionally involved with the characters to really empathise with their troubles. I'm sticking with it because I am a huge fan of Colleen McCulloch's writing and this is starting to pay of as she develops the readers' knowledge of the background to the British transportation of convicts to Australia- as an Aussie, it's fascinating.
