Blank verse influenced by Homer's Odyssey & the Bible. Uriel's hanging out by the sun, Satan's going here & there, humans are suffering and sacrificed with no? gory details. Just pain & misery.
Then, there is Satan's famous line: "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven." (1.263)
I see "reign" & "rein" as an intentional contradiction. Satan needed to be in charge, yet, he wanted to alleviate his suffering.

My guess is that in Milton's time, 1608-1674, there wasn't as much need to explain the horror for it was there all around in war and slavery. I don't know why, but this book seems highly regarded, yet obscure. Maybe because of its religious references. If it's Milton talking about God and the angels, then one would think it be a safe place to have a literary analysis of the bible, especially w/ allusions to Homer.
