“Oh, then you must meet Agnes!” Just mentioning his large orange friend brought the light back to his round face. “She’s taught me a few of her tricks. There’s always puff powder. And I’m not the only chinchilla that’s ever been a pirate, so all vessels have dust tubs. If you’d spent any time even near a pirate vessel that would be obvious!”

The entire crew undulated two digits in a v shape of warding. Except Benj whose black eyes widened, and he sat straight up. Cinrak hoped superstition would come to him soon. All good pirates needed it.

The capybara captain and her marmot lover stared at the remains of the phoenix for a moment.
“Menopause ain’t treating Muriel well.” Cinrak fetched the brush and pan.
“How does a bird go through menopause anyway,” said Loquolchi, standing cross armed in her flannel nighty. “Not evolutionar-re-rarily possible.”

As she did twice a sun since she ticked over into her fourteenth star-turn at the orphanage, she assessed her memorized packing list. A well-read, clean and handsome pirate was a good pirate, in Cinrak’s estimation.
