Through Tony's proactive steps and Mere's inopportune interactions, Diana's plans slowly unraveled. Her murderous companion was shipped off to Bedlam. She had adjusted her plans to some changes, but the smallpox plans were foiled by Betsy who just felt something wasn't right and burned the package. Diana after trying to grab Ned, fell into the fireplace, caught fire, and died.

Diana definitely had dastardly deeds in mind. She planned to give the new baby Sam the small pox, set fire to the nursery with Jane and the children there. She was also planning to miraculously save Ned only to have him die in her arms. Tony rightly described that her entire goal was to make Salt first minister of the treasury and anything in the way would be swept aside.

Diana appears to be planning to give them smallpox, but Early on the said something about Beth being inoculated.

Diana is building sympathy against Jane about her children kept from her. It seems a campaign against Jane. Diana is manipulating her aunt.

Diana killed her guardian and escaped Wales. She is attempting to regain her dominance in society. Tony had become a drunkard and I expect Diana to try to use that against him. Apparently, Caro had developed the same problem so Salt had married her off, now a widow. Tony came back from Petersburg to capture her and cart her off, but knows he must move carefully.
