Yanek is strong. At the concentration camp, Yanek saw his uncle there too, the last member of his family. They had a strong connection. Yanek found out his uncle was killed, so he was devastated. "As the Nazis went through roll call I fought back my tears." (86). This proves Yanek has fortitude because anyone would break down in tears if the last of their relatives died, but he held them back and didn't give up.

Yanek is sympathetic. The prisoners were forced to do a death march for many days with very little food. Yanek noticed that someone his age was falling behind, so he helped him. "Within just a few meters I stumbled under the weight of him, but I didn't let go." (175). This proves Yanek is kind because this act made him more likely to fall behind and get shot, but Yanek still decided to be nice and help him anyway.

Doctor Mengele is heartless. The prisoners were being lined up to either be sent to the left to die or to the right to work. A family was in front of Yanek. When it was their turn, their fate was decided. "He waved his baton to the right for the man and to the left for the woman and the little boy."(150) This proves Doctor Mengele is unsympathetic because he saw they were a family, and still decided to split them up.

One important part was when a prisoner tried to attack a Nazi. A Nazi was beating someone up, so he fought back and was shot. 6 innocent others were killed with him. Before this, Yanek had wanted to fight back. "To fight back was to die quickly and to take others with you." (111). This shows this was a major part of the story because Yanek learned what happened to people who acted in this way, so he lost more hope.

(Ignore my last post, it was a mistake.) Yanek's father is brave. Yanek saw him sneaking out late at night. If he was caught, he would be killed. He let Yanek to come with him. "I began to realize where we were going: Uncle Abraham's bakery! The Nazis had let him keep it to bake bread for the soldiers." (21). This proves Yanek's father is corageous because he risked his life just to get the family some extra food.

Yanek is extremely strong. At the consentration camp, uncle Moshi inspired Yanek to not give up. When the news came to Yanek that he, his last relative, was killed, he was devistated. "As the Nazis went through roll call I fought back my tears." (86). This proves Yanek has a lot of fortitude because anyone would probably break down into tears if their last relative died, but he held them back and didn't give up.
