One crazy part of the story is when Sargant James Reynolds was rescued after 34 days at sea! After their plane crashed Louie and 2 other men survived for more than a month on a raft. The text says, "They felt as if they were on fire, The men's scalded skin cracked and their lips ballooned, bulging against their chins."(112). The shows how battered and bruised these men were during this horrific experience.

A horrifying part in the book is when the guards would treat a duck that they had in the prison. While at the prison Louie and the other POWs were forced to watch some horrific things done to a duck named Gaga, Text says, "Shithead [one of the most vicious guards] opened his pants and violated the bird” (224). This shows how absolutely awful the conditions in these prisons were and how traumatizing they could be.

One unjust part in the story is how the POWs in Kwajalein("Death Island") are treated. When Phil and Louie were brought to Kwajalein they get to know how the prisoners are treated everyday. The text says, "“The guards used the captives to impress each other with their cruelty” (182). This proves how harsh these prisons were and how the guards find it impressive to beat the heck out of the prisoners.

One part I thought was interesting is that Louie was seconds off the mile world record. In the spring of 1938 Louie had his mile time down to 4:13.7, seven seconds off the world record. The Glenn Cunningham said, "That's the next mile champion, when he concentrates on this distance he'll be unbeatable"(41). This proves that Louie wasn't just a "good" runner. He was one of the best, and was coming for the title.
