I immediately hated the use of the term "his woman". Was there no better, less sexist way of saying this? Also, this is my first heavy sci-fi novel of outer space and it may not be my cup of tea. I keep drifting in and out while reading and am somewhat confused and bored by it all.

The author throws in terms from this "new world" he's created without explaining what they mean somehow. It makes the whole thing very confusing. I'm totally lost.
