I wasn't sure for the first 20% of the book. I was intrigued and liked the characters (esp Gabriel), but I've always gone glassy eyed at long flowing descriptions of scenery and clothing etc. Ivanhoe about did me in in this regard. Now having read 40% I am hooked. I've decided to just kind of skim the scenic descriptions and read the "meat" of the story.

Ugh. Landscape descriptions. They've done me in with Watership Down and Anna Karenina. What a shame. Why is it that so many classic books are bogged down with these? I'll never understand it. I think it's one of my big deal-breakers when reading. :/
