The Moorland Cottage is a beautiful story of self-sacrifice and patient endurance. Maggie is such a strong heroine, but not in ways that are traditionally associated with heroism—those of faith, patience, serving others before herself, granting others the benefit of the doubt, and seeking to find the good in others before their flaws. A wonderful, inspiring story, and another great Gaskell read!

Read “My French Master,” a surprisingly touching and layered story of a French nobleman who escapes to England from the Reign of Terror, and who befriends the narrator’s family through becoming a French instructor to her and her sister. Gives keen insight into what life would have been like as a displaced French nobleman at the time of the Revolution. Really compelling!

Finished “Morton Hall”. A compelling read. And I just loved this hysterical quote:
“Ethelinda always maintained that the long chapters in the Bible which were all names, were geography; and though I knew well enough they were not, yet I had forgotten what the right word was, so I let her alone; for one hard word did as well as another.” 🤣🤣🤣

So far I’ve read The Moorland Cottage, The Sexton’s Hero, Christmas Storms and Sunshine, The Well of Pen-Morfa, and The Heart of John Middleton from this collection. All have been absolutely first rate! Gaskell is a wonderful short story writer! Now on to Morton Hall.
