Soon the Carolingian Empire was being attacked by the North and the East and their lands got dispersed but their influence on Western Christianity remained (end of chpt 1).

Fighting for my life to focus... Theres 2 main schools of art: Ada school which is duller and Palace school which is more Byzantine style and was literally by Byzantine artists escaping the iconoclastic period (726-787). Alcuin the scholar wanted to focus more on preservation of knowledge than art so Bibles didn't have much illustration at that time

Summary so far: Charlemagne (768-814) wanted to do a renewal of the Roman Golden age of Christianity so he built a bunch of churches and started a campaign to educate people so that he could have scholars among his staff and in the church. Ivory bookcovers show that they were inspired by contemporary Roman art rather than antique art
