Tone changes completely when history after the schism begins. But I suppose it's easier to give grace to groups of people within living memory.
I really take issue with people interpreting history without consideration of people in the past being capable of a multifaceted character, rather than one dimensional figures driven by one purpose alone.

The scholarship of this book is highly suspect, just judging by the extremely lazy and biased treatment of early church history. (And I'm not ignorant of all the criticisms of Joseph Smith. I prefer to read a simple presentation of facts with less derision and condescension thank you. I recommend Rough Stone Rolling if you want a more balanced approach.)
I'll be taking the rest of this piece with a grain of salt.
