as I read on the flow becomes much more palatable- partly as the descriptions of the creatures become more behavioral & thus easier to envision & digest, partly becasue her writing makes the task of mentally creating a species tree quite engaging. However it is at this point that I realized she probably never had a copy editor - which explains the strange punctuation & non-sequitors.
