It's been too long, but as far as I remember they "graduated" from Mars/planetside combat (end of book 1), got drafted by the various houses (backflash in book 2?), went to space (time skip between book 1 and 2) and are now in the middle of space combat training (beginning of book 2). So there's actually not much missing, just the transition from the old setting (Mars) to the new setting (space).
