at least I learned what being bankrupt in England during Victorian times meant: you went to a place called the 'workhouse' and did stuff like breaking rocks. Interesting approach.

it's gotten much better, as usual, it takes Eliot a little over a hundred pages to get the ball rolling. Best part so far: the confrontation with Tom and his uncle. Tom wants to get rich quick and thinks that he should be given a head start, but his uncle slaps him down quick. A good lesson there for the youth of today, who seem much the same as Tom. I should know, I have to work with one.
