Usually, by this point we know :
- What fairy tale the story is going to be about.
- What historical personage The Mirror & co. are going to rescue.
- What fairy tale writer's going to be impersonated.

But this is taking its sweet time and we know nothing yet! And slow as well. I don't know where they'll go back in time to (1800s?), what the fairy tale connection is (Andersen?), and who the protagonist is (Baigh?).

All right, that revelation was outta left field. I still don't get WHY, because up to that revelation she wasn't doing evil things & her motivations sounded reasonable. But now she's bad because . . . time-travel split effect? Seriously?

And the character playing "Gerda" doesn't make sense in that role! She already had another fairy tale. "Kai" at least does to an extent, but there's no romance in "The Snow Queen."

That can't be the Snow Queen, hahaha. That's ridiculous!

And I'm finding it vaguely offensive that a robot is going to impersonate Andersen (guessing from its name, has to be the robot) because the real Hans Christian is theorised to have been autistic.

Oh, so it IS a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale as suspected from the quotes!

But how is this fuzzy plot going to fit with the story of "The Snow Queen"? Who's going to be the Snow Queen stand-in here? Who's going to be Gerda? Or Kai? And who's going to impersonate Andersen?

I'm just not seeing how, and I fear the square might be made to fit in the circle with a hammer...

Mariella Taylor Ooof. You're handling this better than me. If I don't know within the first few pages/first chapter at least, I lose interest.

I got this as an ARC, so that means "abandonment ist verboten, Fräulein" to me. :D

Ahhhh yeah that makes sense. Well, hopefully there are some redeeming qualities.

TL *Humaning the Best She Can* Good luck 👍🏼

Jen ARCs to me are no more special then a book I buy. A bad book is a bad book. As long as I give an honest review for what I was able to stomach reading, I feel I’ve done my job.

Not criticizing, I find it fascinating to see how others view things differently then me and many times I re-think and even change my mind. I do respect your opinions and love to read your well-thought out reviews. 🙂

So wishing you luck that this one gets better for you!

So far, very little improvement. :(

Thank you, TL!

No worries! And thank you for the well wishes. :)

I have no problem DNFing books, but my rule is to not DNF the ARCs I get. I have got the book for free "in exchange for an honest review" as the disclaimer goes, and I take that to heart. They are giving me a product that took effort to create and that costs money, money I'm not paying, so the very least I can do is give my opinion.

I know there's people who ask for ARCs just to read for free, but to me it comes with a responsibility. :) I don't judge those that DNF them, though, the publishers do have a button to tag DNFs, so they know that'll happen and are presumably accepting of it.

Marquise Priscillia wrote: "I actually thought it was Snow White because of the mirror and title. Though Snow Queen also makes sense. That's odd, they usually advertise what fairy tale it is."

That's because you've not seen the other books in the series. :) Snow White was in "Shattered Snow."

Marquise I'm hoping she does B&B next. :)

Marquise They aren't retellings, Priscilla. It's (view spoiler)

If you read these, do not read them individually, you'll be royally confused. None of the books are standalones, it's a series with mostly the same characters.
