Does anybody know when in real-world time this is set? I know nothing about Chinese history, sadly, so I can't tell if it's set in a kind of quasi-semi-real-but-make-it-fantasy historical timeline, or if it's a completely imaginary AU only "flavored" with a historical setting.

I am asking because of the

If you know, you know.

I never imagined, when I started reading volume 1 for the first time, that I'd come to be so obsessed with this story and these characters. And now my buddy-read partners are making the (re)reading experience even more awesome. I am wallowing in book joy.

You'll have to read it to find out! Or wait for my review, which might possibly include a potato digression. 😁

Mimi It's a mishmash of inspirations from different eras/dynasties in Ancient China. MXTX had a note where she acknowledges which era she took certain elements from so it seems like a person knowing history and then making her story ahistorical on purpose.

Linda ~ they got the mustard out! ~ @Mimi - That makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Ngl, the temptation is there, but I'm a cheap bish sometimes and the library doesn't have them. I might end up splurging in the future though, because I have to admit I'm very curious what has managed to cut through your reading slump so well!

I am so, so cheap myself. I've borrowed the first four books from the library. I'll have to buy the fifth, and while I'm at it I'll buy all the others too — the ones that I've already read. My ultimate stamp of approval!

There was a free, fan-translated edition floating around a while ago. Let me DM you...
