De Quincey is having the same treatment as Valentine in the first trilogy of the mortal instruments. Everyone knew about him, you hear rumors about what he is like etc... I almost forgot that character building wasn't Cassandra's best, the conversation between the characters was so so forced in chapter 6 between her barging in Jem's room, asking him about his parents death before starting to talk about her own life not letting the poor guy talk, then Will joining in, insulting her, Jem's situation and then the day's after breakfast. It was horrendous.

"I apologize for asking, but—your parents are dead, aren't they"
