Oh wow this is bad. I promised myself I'd start D.N.F.ing more often when I'm not vibing with a book, and life's too short to read books like this one.

Remostyler Definitely DNF it if you don’t like it! I’m guilty of it myself, not DNFing, but will hopefully change that soon lol

Mackenzi This is exactly what happened when I tried to read The Six-Gun Tarot by the same author. I think he’s just a general pass for me.

Did he spend waaaay too much time on every single character's physical description on that one too? I could perfectly imagine everyone's appearance in this book at any given moment because it felt like nothing else was being written.

I'm 3-for-3 on trying and failing to find a horror book that uses the U.S. highway system as a setting; I guess it just can't be done well?

Mackenzi I barely remember it's specific sins besides that it took forever to get going, and by the time it did I was getting the vibes I don't actually want to listen to this guy's "nuanced takes" on things like racism and sexism, which it was amping up to do. Spinning wheels on excessive description is definitely a possibility.

Re: highways, have you tried The Left Right Game? I started that in podcast form and never finished it, but it had a great start. It's got a book version, ain't tried it yet but anything's worth a shot right?

Best highway fiction I've experienced is Kentucky Route Zero, which is a gorgeous game and has some literary aspects, but not so much horror, more southern-gothic magical-realism? I definitely recommend it though. I have an extra copy on Steam if you ever wanna give it a try.

Yesssss I loved the Left/Right Game! It's been like 2 years since I last listened to it though, and I didn't know it got a text adaptation.

Were my gaming backlog not filled up for the rest of the year I'd take you up on that, but I'll add that to my wishlist for a rainy day in like 2025, haha
