Translation might be a bit wonky at points on first glance but I'm excited to be able to read some genuine Afghan literature. A full novel from Khalili is gonna be interesting.

Pleasantly surprised that Amanullah Khan isn't just demonized throughout this despite the author's father's death being directly linked to Amanullah's rise to the throne and the subject of this whole book being the life of Amanullah's successor.

As a piece of Afghan culture, inspired by genuine Afghan history, this is really interesting. But the translation is very uneven and quite rough. I can't even really be sure how much of the prose is Khalili and how much is translator Moonzajer.
