I think all ancient cultures have practices and beliefs that are over-the-top by modern standards. My theory is that Riordan was able to sanitize/mask the more extremes Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultural aspects in previous series, whereas he wasn't able to with Norse mythology. I think there's little wiggle room there, unlike being able to replace animal entrails with teddy bear stuffing, to use one example.
