In his studies, Tchaikovsky never excelled at conducting. Apparently he explained to one of his classmates, in dead seriousness, that he could only conduct with his right hand as a phobia that HIS HEAD MIGHT ROLL OFF at any moment required his left hand to support his chin at all times!

I wonder if he was one of those conductors that throws their head around a lot. I can’t think of a better way to describe that lol

Haha! Maybe. Beethoven was good for that. He'd be jumping around like a lunatic during the fortes and just about crawling under the music stand during pianissimos... But Tchaikovsky doesn't strike me as the type. Emotional, yes; exuberant... not so much! 😅
Right, Hachi!Though, I'm a bit torn about Tchaikovsky atm! I really enjoy his work but Greenberg notes that he was infact a paedophile who enjoyed the company of 14-15 yr old boys. Very hard to reconcile the beauty and brilliance of his work with such a dark and revolting predilection. Other than to say that it was, apparently, somewhat commonplace at the time; but I don't much like that as a justification.
