He pulled me into his arms, holding me close as he fell asleep, like he had been doing since the river trip, but this time his touch didn’t calm or soothe me. This time it hurt. It hurt because it was a lie.

I loved the way our fingers fit together when they were intertwined. It felt… right somehow. We’d been fitting together every other way since we were kids. It only made sense that we would fit together like this too.
