Wow. This is really helping explain some of the underpinnings of the current (and ongoing) conflict. It's way more complicated than the media makes it out to be. And I don't see any easy solutions.

“But my conscience was being rewired. Though not yet a Christian, I was really trying to follow the ethical teachings of Jesus. Allah had no problem with murder. In fact, he insisted on it. But Jesus held me to a much higher standard, and now I found I couldn’t kill even a terrorist.”

"Tit for tat, the reciprocal killing continued. An eye for an eye—and there was no shortage of eyes."

"In the weeks to follow, the Shin Bet would begin searching for lessons to be found in the rubble of what would come to be known simply as 9/11. Why had the U.S. intelligence services not been able to prevent the disaster? For one thing, they operated independently and competitively. For another, they relied mostly on technology and rarely collaborated with terrorists."

“In the first 2 ½ years of the second intifada, Sadam Hussain paid 35 million dollars to the families of Palestinian martyrs. 10 thousand dollars to the family of anyone killed fighting Israel, and 25 thousand to the families of every suicide bomber. You could say a lot of things about this mindless battle over real estate, but you could never say that life was cheap.”

"My father had never taught me to hate. ... He was much more interested in the god of the Koran than in politics. Allah had given us the responsibility of eradicating the Jews, and my father didn’t question that—though he personally had nothing against them."

“I loved my father so deeply, and I admired so much about who he was and what he stood for. But for a man who could not bring himself to harm an insect, he had obviously found a way to rationalize the idea that it was fine for somebody else to explode people into scraps of meat—as long as he didn’t personally bloody his hands.”

Wow. Just... wow.
The way this guy describes his father with so much love, but so much dismay. It's heartbreaking. And so perplexing how a person can be such a genuinely kind pacifist who'd never personally hurt a fly... but who, at the same time, can consider an entire ethnic group to be equal to dogs--condoning the deaths of helpless civilians, as long as it's at the hands of someone else.
