I am reading this at an important stage of my development as a reader and writer. Merton has not once displayed that horrid farce of modern cynicism that characterizes most (fictional) works that address religion and spirituality. The author is justly unsparing in his treatment of those who feign piety, though he is not without mercy. He writes movingly of his childhood in France.
