If the depths had been lit, I don’t doubt but some of the brothers would have needed the point of a sword to help them up, but darkness hides all sins, and we could fool ourselves a floor lay unseen twenty feet below.
What is this sentence? There are so many of these sentences that to me are just overly confusing for no reason. It makes the book so hard to comprehend.
