Lawrence's characterization is so sensitive. The relationships between Mrs. Gertrude Morel and her four children are affectionate and fashioned according to their varying personalities. The father, Walter, although obviously antagonistic to Gertrude, is not deplorable and, in fact, Lawrence makes you wish Walter could just sober up and become a better person.
