Adams views of obligations as fundamentally social in nature makes a lot of sense to me, even obvious now, but that surprised me because I use to be very Kantian in viewing them as derivable from rationality itself, ie moral obligation is ‘self-imposed’ by the recognition of ourselves as rational beings. Autonomy after all comes from “auto”(self) and “nomos”(law). But Adams is really changing my mind!
