Lasser, the dead man, ran a small stakes poker game that he didn't even play in, but there were a couple of low level hoods who were involved. Lasser's friends also claim it was high stakes.

The janitor (superintendent) who was bludgeoned with an ax hosted a weekly crap game in the basement of the apartment bldg. He would have had to pay off the cops in order to do that, and they would have to give their sergeant a cut. Carella and Hawes know that, so they question the sergeant who swears there was no crap game.

Hawes and Carella investigate the ax murder of building superintendent Lasser. He is found by a seven-year-old boy who's afraid there will be ghosts. Whitson, a black man who chopped wood for Lasser, is an early suspect. Apparently it's his ax.
