The criminal case moves more towards the foreground. Most likely it neither suicide, nor an accident, but murder. There are many suspects, but no strong motive for the murder. Events in the past seem to have an impact on the case, most importantly Eugenia's purportedly dead brother. Marinow seems to be interested in Zofia not only as a witness.
