The Tale of the Firebird ~ 4 stars ~ It’s kind of funny how there isn’t any good moral here. It seems like disobeying benefitted Ivan. It’s an enjoyable story, nonetheless. And here’s a humorous tidbit: I initially misread “kingly gifts” as “kinky gifts,” which would have made this a much different story! 😂

The Six Swans ~ 3 stars ~ A lot of times, it does feel like a fairy tale is missing some key ingredient, and that felt especially true here. Funke’s notes were worthy of 5 stars, though.

Bluebeard ~ 4 stars ~ I was familiar enough with Bluebeard’s infamy to know what his wife would find in his secret room, but I didn’t know how the story would end. I’m satisfied with how it concluded, but I’d love it if someone worked out a retelling that made the wife the heroine of her own story. I really enjoyed Funke’s commentary on this one.

Through the Water Curtain ~ 4 stars ~ Well, that took an unexpected turn! I don’t agree with Funke’s assertion that this one is light-hearted. It’s fun, but it has folk horror vibes. There are a few aspects that are similar to The Wicker Man, but this is ultimately a much different story.

Kotura, Lord of the Winds ~ 2 stars ~ The stars are solely for Funke’s commentary, as I was relieved to find she acknowledged the problematic nature of the story. I did not enjoy this misogynistic tale at all.

The Boy Who Drew Cats ~ 4.5 stars ~ Of course the cats did it! I love how this focused on the importance of art.,
