Honolulu - Beautiful opening paragraph. Brief evocative sketches of place. Followed by the intriguing seeming non sequitor of 'But there are people who take salt in their coffee'. Puts me in mind of Conrad's writing. Also, MR James.

Honolulu. Sadly, due to those irritating interruptions called Life, my reading of this beautifully crafted short story was broken into three sessions. I'm annoyed because I'm sure the flow would have been so much more satisfying in one sitting.

Writing very much of its time, but it is beautiful. The prose is clear and descriptive, the characters believable and worthy of that belief. Have just read 'Barnard' which is very satisfying, reminding me variously of Joyce's Dubliners and some of DH Lawrence's short stories. I appreciate the depictions of worlds long gone, such as the rejection of 'street-cars ever running in the idle streets of Papeete' (Tahiti).
