Our landfills are already full of durable products slowly being crushed by accumulating layers of additional durable goods. Each lamellation of discarded lampshades, side tables, bicycles, keyboards, sweaters, hot tubs, gaming consoles, toilets, children’s toys and so on, many of them perfectly functional, represents a problem not with the physical lifetimes of things but with our lack of desire to hang on to them.
