Yeah, it's not an easy read for a modern day fantasy reader. It feels wrong - the pacing; it's telling more than showing often times; characters are very distant from the reader, so no emotional investment ; I view it as a piece that's more valuable for its influence than the execution of its story... That being said, there are definitely parts that SLAP but those are few and far between
