Bachelors were seen as "a thorn in the side of a stable society...vilified and ridiculed" (108). This is the pre-glamorized version of bachelorhood: unmanly, deficient, "dull and stupid," whom miss out on the happiness of marriage (which also makes you a real man). Interesting.
